we bought this unit new 1.5 yrs ago. since new we have had a problem with oil passing through into the air lines and shop equipment. has anyone else had this same problem

Hallo Greg,

The normal quantity of oil in the compressed air after the screw compressor should be not more than 7 - 9 mg/m3. If the quantity is much more, that means there is a problem in the air - oil separating. Most likely the reason of increased oil quantity in the compressed air is that there is a problem with the oil return line. This line is returning the remaining oil after the separator filter back to the airend. Search for a small hose that is going after the separator filter to the intake side of the airend and check it.

Other reason could be that there is problem with the separator filter.

Another reason of high content of oil in the compressed air is when the compressor is working on very low load. If you use the compressor just for a couple of minutes then the oil cannot reach the normal working temperature (68 - 86 degrees C). In such case condensate appears in the oil and the oil becomes in foam (coagulates) and the coagulated oil is passing through the separator filter in the compressed air.

Stop the compressor and wait for a couple of hours. Then check if there is foam in the separator tank and airend. If there is foam instead of oil free of bubbles that means that the oil is coagulated. If this is the scenario, then change the oil, oil filter and separator filter and start using compressor for longer time until it reaches normal working temperatures and work for at least 45 minutes.

thanks for the response,  We have Quincy reps and our service company in and out trying to figure it out. our company maintenance dept. thinks it has to do with the pick up line in the recovery tank,  it is about 2 inches from the bottom of the tank and our feeling is that it should be right next to the bottom. it  seems like you are in agreement???   they are working on it . I was just wondering if it was a common problem with this model or not.  thanks,  Greg

I suppose that by recovery tank you mean separator tank and by pickup line you mean the oil line that goes from the separator tank to the thermostatic valve (and then to the airend). If this is what you mean then I cannot agree that the height of the oil line from the separator tank has anything to do with the oil quantity in the compressed air.

Was there a lot of oil in the bottom of the separator element when you opened the separator tank for inspection? Any oil that passes through the separator will sit in the bowl at the bottom of the element. This is then sucked back into the airend by the scavenge line. Have you checked the scavenge line orifice is free from blockage? The scavenge line must sit in the centre of the bowl. If its not centred, or is too short, oil carryover can occur.

The scavenger line should be cut at a 45 degree angle and sitting on the bottom of the separator. It is adjustable up and down at the sump cover by loosening the comp ferrel witch holds a rubber grommet to allow the scav line to move. Loosen nut and tap with Palm of hand until you feel it bottom out and you are good to go
